Today we continue our series with Jared Scholz where we talk about helping people follow Jesus. Jared says, “Any spiritual maturity that I’ve experienced is very closely tied to the weight of leadership.”
Leadership intersects with every Christian, whether you believe you have a leadership gift or not. At least half of the curriculum of Jesus in our purification process and our character development requires we are helping someone else follow Jesus in real time.
This has become an overflow of who Jared is and those that he influences, starting with his own family. He says, if you ask my kids, ages 9 to 19, “Name three people you are personally discipling.” He believes all of them would be able to name three people.
Discipleship is helping people follow Jesus in real time. Too often, discipleship has simply become the name for a class or a school. But real time is contingent on me knowing you. Real time looks like the following.
- Being there for a lady going through separation from an abusive marriage.
- Helping a high school student do a budget!
Jared says Jesus’ focus on making disciples impacts everything. Discipleship is not a subset of church or Christianity. It is the whole mission of Jesus. All of church, all of doctrine, all of style fits into it.
You can have a small intimate setting of believers who hug all the time who don’t make disciples. And you can have a large church that is effective in making disciples. It comes back to the heart and the intention of the leadership.
Who is one person you are currently discipling? If you have someone, how can you help them follow Jesus this week? If you don’t have someone you are discipling, ask the Holy Spirit who He has for you to pour into.
