Today I invite you into a series of conversations we are starting about being God’s man in the family. One of the key steps in that is embracing your identity in Christ. When we put our faith in Him and what He has done in us and wants to do through us, we grow in the courage to step into our role as fathers, both biologically and spiritually.
For the longest time I lacked confidence as a father. Around 20 years ago people began to speak into my life that I was a good dad and that God wanted me to father others spiritually. I struggled to receive that.
For me a key breakthrough came about 13 years ago when I was speaking with a friend and addressing a challenge and I said, “We will figure it out.” And very quickly the Holy Spirit said to me, “Oh you will, will you?” And as I was stammering to know how to respond, the Holy Spirit said, “Why don’t you let Me show you?”
And showing our kids the way forward is at the heart of fathering. For the longest time there were areas where I took the insecure approach of thinking, “My boys will figure it out. I did.” Even though on many occasions I didn’t figure it out and almost shipwrecked my life on a few of them.
Since that time, I’ve tried to lean in and help show my boys the way forward. And when I don’t know, to be there with them as a learner together, seeking help from others.
Check out the video to learn how important it is to work on our role of being sons so that we can be the fathers we were created to be. When we receive the love of our heavenly Father it empowers us to be confident sons. And being a confident son makes it so much easier to be a humble and confident father.
This week, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the Father’s love for you as His son.
