Today we start a new series.  We are going to talk about a word that it not fancy or fun but it is essential.  That word is foundations.

Foundations impact everything we see and do.  Every structure has some sort of foundation. . .whether it is a building, a home, or a living thing.  And without a solid foundation, all structures will collapse.

Paul said in 1 Cor. 3:11, “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”  As followers of Jesus we say He is our firm foundation.  But what is the key to building on that foundation?

One interesting example we see in the natural is the Leaning Tower of Pisa.  Why does it lean?  Because of its foundation.  Yet, why is the tower still standing?  Because of its foundation.  In our case, God can save that which is on its way to collapse and even restore it.

When we lived in Scotland in the early 2000s we had friends who lived on Sandy Court.  Their house was one of the first few off the coastline with the Irish Sea.  And unfortunately, they had foundation issues.  (There was a reason why the street was named Sandy Court!)

In Matthew 5-7 Jesus gives His Sermon on the Mount.  In it he repeatedly references the law and then calls us up to the higher standard of love rooted in His righteousness.  At the end in Chapter 7 he talks about the difference between the wise man and the foolish man.  What is that difference?   Is it listening to and knowing the teachings of Jesus?  No!  In this metaphor both men hear the teachings of Jesus.  The wise man is the one who obeys those teachings.   Obeying is what builds our house on the Rock!!

Ask God this week, “What is in your Word that I have heard but haven’t applied?”  Then take what He shows you and apply it.  I look forward to seeing you next week and my prayer is that we both would have become a little bit wiser by applying Gods’ Word!

About 15 years ago our heavenly Father began encouraging me in my role as His son and out of that in my role as a father, both biologically and spiritually. Through multiple encounters on my journey God has revealed His heart as my Father and affirmed my sonship in Him. Out of this has come His call to fully embrace who He has created me to be as a father and to share that with others.
