Today we lean into the fact that we all need others to help us in our parenting journey.
We (Steve and Bob) both had the privilege of being a part of a real dynamic spiritual community early in our parenting journeys. Most of our children’s peers and those who were a few years older than them were positive role models.
Yet we have both had seasons where we had to be intentional about creating community. It’s easy to just wish the right people would show up. But the Bible says, “He who wants a friend must be friendly themselves.” Many people are waiting for an invitation to join us on the journey.
Both of us have married well. Our wives have really helped us at creating a place at the table for others. Our families have chosen to have a lot of people in our homes for meals or overnight or even longer. By sharing life together many of these people have made a positive impact on our children.
We all have a great need to be connected. We need a spiritual family. Ask the Holy Spirit, “Who are the people you want me to connect to and with?” Ask God to provide those people – spiritual brothers, sisters, and parents.
Do your part as well. The more Jesus is practically expressed in you, the more people want to be around you. So choose to be a grateful, humble, generous person. In addition, bring what you have to the table even if you feel inadequate.
There is a hunger in our society among young people and young adults. They want our attention, they want to be included in our families. Ask the Holy Spirit, “Who do I need to set a chair out for at my table?”
This week take a step towards Jesus and take a step towards others. Strengthen your spiritual family.
