Today we continue our series by diving into Psalm 34. It starts off with a declaration, “I will bless the Lord at all times, His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” One of the ways we ‘bless’ God is by recognizing and proclaiming who He is and by thanking Him for all of His kindness towards us.
David goes on to say, “My soul shall make its boast in the Lord.” There are a lot of things we could boast in. But I am who I am because of what Jesus has done. I choose to boast in Him. He is good. He is benevolent and kind.
Verse 3 says, “O magnify the Lord with me.” When we worship God it isn’t that we make God bigger but we make our perspective and the perspective others have of Him bigger. Years ago in Scotland I was inspired to draw a picture. In this picture there was a small circle about the size of a penny which was the earth and then I drew God’s eye and it covered the entire page. It changed my perspective of God.
God is amazing. He wants us to get to know Him through first hand encounters and experience. We are exhorted to, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” As we grow in a healthy understanding of who He is we live in the tension of being able to walk in great intimacy with God while choosing to fear Him because He is so beyond anything we can comprehend! We show Him reverence, respect, and awe and He promises us that if we fear Him we “shall lack no good thing.”
This week I encourage you to press into God with me. Let’s listen to His word and pursue intimacy with Him while embracing the fear of the Lord.
