*This week’s blog is only in a written format.*
Today we continue to glean from the depth of wisdom found in the Psalms. Psalm 90 starts out with, “Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.” Another way to say that is, “God, you are our home. Wherever you are, when we are with you, we are at home.”
God’s Presence is the primary thing that makes heaven, heaven. Heaven, as amazing as it is, is only a house. But God’s Presence makes it home. Being with Him is the greatest ache of our heart. That is why in Psalms 16, 73, and 142 God Himself is referred to as our Portion or our Inheritance. To inherit Him is so much greater than any house or land both here and in the next life.
Verses 10 and 12 remind us how short life is and to live this life in light of that. “The days of our lives are 70 years, and if by reason of strength they are eighty years. . . .so teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” As we get older there is a greater tendency to want to make our days count. There is a greater focus on the question, “Will anything I am doing outlive me?”
Though it is only natural to want to be remembered I think what is so much more important than that is what we have sown into others. Have we poured out our lives into them? Have we both sown and scattered seeds of love and mercy, revealing the heart of God to both the lost and the believer alike? And have we watered what we and others have sown?
If so, we can have confidence that where we plant and water, God will bring the increase. And we can cry out like the Psalmist in verse 17, “Establish the work of our hands for us; Yes, establish the work of our hands.”
Join me in asking God this week to, “Teach me to number my days that I may gain a heart of wisdom.”
