This week we are wrapping up our series on the finished work of Jesus titled, “It is Finished.”  We have taken time to realize that many of us who know we were saved by grace through faith are living in ways that show we still depend on the law to justify us in more ways than we probably realized.

There are two different passages that state, “a little leaven leavens the whole lump.”  One place this phrase is used is Galatians 5:9.  In that context it is saying a little bit of legalism permeates everything.  When we start living by rules instead of love it is easy to add rule upon rule in an effort to control ourselves or others.

This phrase is also used in I Corinthians 5:6 by the same writer Paul.  Here he is talking about abusing our freedom in Christ or giving ourselves a “license” to sin.  Some people develop the attitude, “I’m free in Christ so I can do whatever sin I want to.”  No!  In this passage a man was sleeping with his father’s wife!  And Paul says, “a little leavens the whole lump.”

Jesus challenges us to take up our cross daily.  It was for freedom that Christ set us free so that we would no longer be slaves to sin.  Don’t indulge in sin, whether it is the sin of drunkenness or the sin of judgmentalism.  Don’t walk in license or legalism!  Instead let’s walk in the freedom we find in the finished work of Jesus.  Let’s enjoy the liberty we have, not as an excuse for sin, but let’s use it to empower us to joyfully take up our cross today.

Once again, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal His love for you this week.  And as you rest in His love, ask Him to show you what He is doing and then get in step with Him.  Go for it!

About 15 years ago our heavenly Father began encouraging me in my role as His son and out of that in my role as a father, both biologically and spiritually. Through multiple encounters on my journey God has revealed His heart as my Father and affirmed my sonship in Him. Out of this has come His call to fully embrace who He has created me to be as a father and to share that with others.
