Today Steve and I continue our conversation about being disciple makers.

All of us need affirmation and encouragement.  It is so important for us to speak life and truth into others.  Steve says, “Give away what you want.  Determine what you need.  Then give it away.”  So if you need encouragement start encouraging others.

We tend to assume people are fine but more people need encouragement than we realize.  Two assumptions we should make are:

  1. I’m not as good of an encourager as I think I am.
  2. Everyone needs and wants encouragement and affirmation.

The first step in encouragement is to be present, to show up, and give yourself to others.

It’s a heart attitude of, “I’m here for you. I will do whatever it takes to get to you if you need me.”

The 2nd step in encouragement is listening.  Take the time to listen to what others are saying.

Then speak life and value into others.  Short, simple phrases can have a big impact, “I’m for you.  I believe in you.  I enjoyed watching you.  Thank you.”  Our words are like seeds that sow courage and value into others that over time produce fruit.

Being there is important in tough times and in times of celebration.  When we are present in people’s critical moments in creates a bond.  Seize those.  You don’t have to do anything.  Just be there.

It’s not hard.  Take full advantage of opportunities to connect.  Give yourself away.  This week ask the Holy Spirit to be aware of who needs your presence.  And remember everyone needs an affirming word.

About 15 years ago our heavenly Father began encouraging me in my role as His son and out of that in my role as a father, both biologically and spiritually. Through multiple encounters on my journey God has revealed His heart as my Father and affirmed my sonship in Him. Out of this has come His call to fully embrace who He has created me to be as a father and to share that with others.
